Computed tomographic anatomy of the canine temporal bone with inner and middle ear

Introduction

Computed tomography of the temporal bone and the ear is recommended in a wide range of pathologies present in the dog: pain, deafness, otitis media, cholesteatoma, traumatisms.

The anatomy of the temporal bone and the ear is complex as this region concentrates a large number of bony, muscular, articular, vascular and nervous structures.

The purpose of the current anatomy module is to describe the normal anatomy of the inner and middle ear of the dog as depicted using CT of the temporal bone.

Material and methods

A CT examination of the skull was conducted  under general anesthesia on a 7 year old dog, positioned in ventral recumbency. The scan was performed using a 32-slice multidetector scanner (Toshiba Aquilion) by Susanne AEB Boroffka, dipl. ECVDI, PhD (Utrecht, Netherlands). Contiguous frontal 0,6 mm thick images were acquired without intravenous administration of iodinated contrast medium and reconstructed using bone algorithm.
Sagittal and dorsal multiplanar reconstructions (MPR) were created.
3D images of the temporal bone of the dog were obtained in Volume Rendering using the Dicom software Horos.

The anatomical parts were labeled by Antoine Micheau (MD, Radiologist, anatomist - Montpellier, France), according to the Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria (NAV).

The anatomical parts of the temporal bone of the dog have been grouped into different themes:

  • General Anatomy
  • Cranium
  • Bones of the cranium
  • Tympanic part of temporal bone
  • Squamous part of temporal bone
  • Petrous part of temporal bone
  • Bony labyrinth
  • Internal acoustic meatus
  • Tympanic cavity
  • Tympanic membrane
  • Auditory ossicles
  • Articulations of auditory ossicles
  • Muscles of the auditory ossicles
  • Auditory tube
  • External acoustic meatus
