Anatomy atlas of the dog’s nasal cavity

Anatomy atlas of the dog’s nasal cavity

Introduction

The nasal cavity is a complex region where numerous anatomical structures overlap. In veterinary medicine, it is often explored through imaging (radiography, fibroscopy, CT, MRI) or surgery (for rhinoplasty, rhinotomy, nasal planectomy, etc.) which requires a good understanding of its anatomy.
This vet-Anatomy module contains illustrations dedicated to the anatomy of the nose, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. These labeled anatomical illustrations are presented in the form of an illustrated atlas of the nasal cavity.
The goal of this atlas is to help students, veterinarians, radiologists, and surgeons understand the complex anatomy of this region.

Material and methods

Seventy-two original medical illustrations were created, describing the nose, nasal cavity, nasal septum, nasal meatuses and turbinates, bones of the nasal cavity and the cartilages of the nose as well as the vessels and nerves in dogs. The major anatomical differences between a brachycephalic, mesocephalic and dolichocephalic dog have been highlighted.

The illustrations were created by Chloé Paris, scientific illustrator, under the anatomical and scientific supervision of Stephan Mahler, DVM, PhD, veterinary anatomist and Antoine Micheau M.D. (Radiologist - Montpellier, France).

The anatomical terms, listed in the Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria (sixth edition - 2017 by ICVGAN) have been translated from Latin into 10 languages and a definition for each anatomical term is available in French and English.
