Atlas of radiological anatomy in the horse

Introduction

Radiography is a commonly used imaging modality in horses, particularly in the event of a sale or lameness diagnosis: combined with ultrasound examination, or even CT and MRI, it allows an accurate and early diagnosis of lesions, particularly osteoarticular ones.

A good knowledge of anatomy is essential for the interpretation of radiographic images. The aim of this module is to provide students, veterinary practitioners and radiologists with basic information on the normal radiographic anatomy of the adult horse.

Material and methods

These radiographic examinations, using the most common incidences, were carried out by Marion Fusellier, DVM, Senior Lecturer in Medical Imaging and Carla Bouillaut, Medical Imaging Technician, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vétérinaire Oniris, Nantes - France. In addition, a few examinations were provided by Dr Susanne Boroffka dipl. ECVDI, PhD (Utrecht University, Netherlands) and by Dr Sébastien Caure (Centre Hospitalier Vétérinaire équin de Livet, Saint Michel de Livet, France).

The anatomical parts have been labeled by Stephan Mahler, DVM, MSc, PhD (Veterinary Anatomist - IMAIOS), according to the Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria (NAV). The labeling was limited to the main structures of clinical interest and have been organized by different themes:

  • Body parts
  • Regions
  • Bones
    • Bones of the cranium
    • Bones of the face
    • Hyoid apparatus
    • Vertebral column
    • Numbering - Vertebrae
    • Thoracic skeleton
    • Numbering - Ribs
    • Bones of the thoracic limb
    • Bones of the pelvic limb
  • Teeth
  • Joints
  • Muscles
  • Digestive system
  • Respiratory system
  • Mediastinum
  • Middle ear
